Women's Team Fundraising Party

On July 20, former Whitecaps owner Wendy McDonald generously hosted a fundraising party for the women's team at her home. The weather held and a good time was had by all. Most importantly, funds were raised to support all Whitecaps women's programs, and the Foundation's efforts to get girls active and healthy.

Blake Wagner Serves Up Coffee for Kids Camps

Patrons at a downtown Vancouver Tim Hortons Restaurant got a surprise this morning, as a new server appeared to make their morning coffee. Patrons at a downtown Vancouver Tim Hortons Restaurant got a surprise this morning, as a new server appeared to make their morning coffee. Vancouver Whitecaps FC number 19 Blake Wagner arrived bright and early to support Tim Hortons Camp Day. “I was lucky to be able to go to camp when I was a kid, and I think every child should have a chance to do the same”, Blake said while serving up another iced cappuccino.

Camp Day is one day a year when Tim Hortons Restaurant Owners across Canada and the United States donate every penny from coffee sales to the Tim Horton Children's Foundation.  Last year a total of 9.7 million dollars was raised.

Women's Team Captain Has Passion for Youth Development

The Whitecaps Foundation is proud to profile one of this year’s funding recipients – Martina Franko – captain of the Whitecaps Women. Martina, a defender, appeared in eight of the ten matches in the 2010 W-League season, played 629 minutes and scored the first Whitecaps women’s goal of the year. The 34-year-old's efforts were all the more impressive, as the centre back returned to action just months after giving birth to her son Micah. "Being able to play competitively again after having a baby, and enjoying the atmosphere on a team that was successful, proved really rewarding for me," Franko said of the 2010 season.

Successful Launch of Play Soccer So They Can by North Vancouver FC

Back in June, we announced that OA Projects has been selected by the Whitecaps Foundation as a charity of choice due to the strong alignment of mandates between the two organizations. Run by executive director and former Whitecaps employee Gavin Hollett, OA Projects enables soccer programs to promote peace and understanding among youth.

OA’s Play Soccer So They Can initiative is a great way for young people in BC to get involved in directly supporting war-affected youth.  It brings players, clubs and teams together to support soccer-based peacebuilding. Play Soccer So They Can works by having league, recreational and informal soccer clubs collect pledges for designated matches so that war-affected youth too can play.
