The weather held and a good time was had by all. Most importantly, funds were raised to support all Whitecaps women's programs, and the Foundation's efforts to get girls active and healthy.
Vancouver Whitecaps FC number 19 Blake Wagner arrived bright and early to support Tim Hortons Camp Day. “I was lucky to be able to go to camp when I was a kid, and I think every child should have a chance to do the same”, Blake said while serving up another iced cappuccino.

The Whitecaps Foundation is proud to profile one of this year’s funding recipients – Martina Franko – captain of the Whitecaps Women. Martina, a defender, appeared in eight of the ten matches in the 2010 W-League season, played 629 minutes and scored the first Whitecaps women’s goal of the year. The 34-year-old's efforts were all the more impressive, as the centre back returned to action just months after giving birth to her son Micah. "Being able to play competitively again after having a baby, and enjoying the atmosphere on a team that was successful, proved really rewarding for me," Franko said of the 2010 season.

Successful Launch of Play Soccer So They Can by North Vancouver FC

Back in June, we announced that OA Projects has been selected by the Whitecaps Foundation as a charity of choice due to the strong alignment of mandates between the two organizations. Run by executive director and former Whitecaps employee Gavin Hollett, OA Projects enables soccer programs to promote peace and understanding among youth.

The Whitecaps Women's Soccer Series went from strength to strength this year. The Whitecaps women took the United Soccer Leagues W-League Western Conference title, defeated league points leaders Hudson Valley Quickstrike Lady Blues in the W-League semifinals before narrowly missing out on a win in the final. Perhaps most importantly, Whitecaps FC set a W-League-leading average attendance of 9,278 across their six home matches. This was the second year that the team took their 'home' games to communities across Metro Vancouver - even travelling to Victoria on Vancouver Island for a key fixture against Seattle Sounders. The community games were mounted in partnership with local soccer clubs, giving young club players the opportunity to experience the women's game at the highest level. The Whitecaps FC women's team devoted time after each match to meet their young fans. Players like Kara Lang, Martina Franko, and Melissa Tancredi are proving to be great role models to a new generation of soccer stars.

Whitecaps Foundation Gets Its Own MLS Star

Paul Vigano is a long time Whitecaps fan. How did you first get involved with the Whitecaps Foundation?
I heard about the Foundation through the Whitecaps website. I was impressed with what I read and how the the 'Caps are giving back to the community. I didn't get involved right away but it was always in the back of my mind. Eventually, I contacted the Foundation and asked if I could donate and it took off from there.

Whitecaps Players Kick For a Cure

Whitecaps players and staff once again participated and supported the 2010 Kick For a Cure, which took place on Saturday July 24th at Heritage Woods Secondary, Port Moody. Several Whitecaps players helped coach soccer clinics for U5 to U13 boys and girls. Participation in the clinics was free, but participants were encouraged to gather donations to support the two Foundations. Nearly $70,000 was raised from the event. The first place winner for the youth who secured the most pledges was Ellie Baker and second place was Dominic Rungen.

Whitecaps Foundation teams up with OA Projects

OA Projects has been selected by the Whitecaps Foundation as a charity of choice due to the strong alignment of mandates between the two organizations. Run by executive director and former Whitecaps employee Gavin Hollett, OA Projects are designed to promote peace and understanding among local youth.

OA Projects is a Canadian grassroots organization that uses soccer to support community rebuilding efforts by war-affected youth. The organization was founded in 2006 by University of Victoria students and is currently focused on supporting grassroots efforts to promote a peace-building framework in northern Uganda. That region has been severely impacted by 22 years of brutal civil conflict. OA Projects' major initiatives include training youth coaches, organizing soccer camps, and a league for peace, as well as rehabilitating community soccer fields. The main focus of the work is to enable a general reconciliation amongst the population by connecting war-affected youth and local youth leaders, under the encompassing umbrella of soccer to discuss important peace-building issues, such as sexual and gender-based violence.

Come join us for the annual Kick for a Cure!

Kick for a Cure is a yearly event to raise awareness for childhood cancer and the need for cancer research.
