Whitecaps Women Lead the Way

The Whitecaps Women's Soccer Series went from strength to strength this year. The Whitecaps women took the United Soccer Leagues W-League Western Conference title, defeated league points leaders Hudson Valley Quickstrike Lady Blues in the W-League semifinals before narrowly missing out on a win in the final. Perhaps most importantly, Whitecaps FC set a W-League-leading average attendance of 9,278 across their six home matches. This was the second year that the team took their 'home' games to communities across Metro Vancouver - even travelling to Victoria on Vancouver Island for a key fixture against Seattle Sounders. The community games were mounted in partnership with local soccer clubs, giving young club players the opportunity to experience the women's game at the highest level. The Whitecaps FC women's team devoted time after each match to meet their young fans. Players like Kara Lang, Martina Franko, and Melissa Tancredi are proving to be great role models to a new generation of soccer stars.
Development of women's soccer is one of the key focuses of the Whitecaps Foundation. We are extremely grateful to our generous donors for enabling us to support the series; our corporate donors BC Hydro, Flight Centre, HUB International Insurance Brokers, and Mr Lube, as well as the individuals who enabled more than 200 disadvantaged youth to attend a Whitecaps Women's Soccer Series game. We are already looking forward to the 2011 season. For more information on supporting women’s soccer, contact Andy Price at 778 836 2639 or aprice@whitecapsfoundation.org
