Whitecaps Players Get Active with Kids in Surrey
May 28, 2010
May 17th saw the second of twelve Wendy’s Community Clinics taking place in 2010, run by the Whitecaps throughout the province. Langley Girls and Surrey Youth Soccer Clubs hosted the Surrey/Langley clinic at Newton Athletic Park. A sunny evening saw 153 children take part in the clinic, with participants travelling in from as far as Chilliwack! The excellent weather encouraged a number of first time visitors to the clinic, and we were pleased to be able to introduce many local kids to the beautiful game.
These clinics allow kids to learn new soccer skills from Whitecaps men’s and women’s players, participate in a mini-world cup tournament, get player autographs and enjoy healthy, fun activities. Most importantly, the camps are completely free for all participants.
For over a decade, these community clinics have been a large part of the Whitecaps’ commitment to community development and BC youth. More than 2,200 youth and their families across BC will get to experience these soccer clinics free of charge in 2010. Seven camps take place in Metro Vancouver, and five will be held in Nanaimo, Victoria, Prince George, Kelowna and Kamloops respectively. The camps are open to youth between the ages of six and 12.
Run by Canadian soccer legend Sam Lenarduzzi, the Clinics give BC children from all backgrounds the opportunity to enjoy sport, meet role models, improve their fitness and learn skills for living a healthy, active life. Participants in the clinics range from aspiring youth club players to kids who have never kicked a soccer ball before. All the youth who take part will benefit from training with elite-level soccer players and coaches, whether to improve existing soccer skills, develop a love of the game, or just discover the joy of healthy, active living.
Wendy’s Restaurants of Canada is the presenting sponsor of this program. In addition, Vancouver Whitecaps FC and the Whitecaps Foundation provide resources and funds to keep the clinics free to all. Thank you to all Whitecaps Foundation donors for enabling the Clinics to reach even more children in 2010!
