11 year old proves that anyone can make a difference

October 28, 2009

An 11-year-old girl with a big heart and an ambitious plan is doing what she can to help underprivileged kids play sports.

Chilliwack resident Ashley Chester isn't going to let recent cuts in provincial sports funding affect her family or community. Although she is only 11 years old, Ashley speaks passionately about the long term health and wellness benefits that sport can achieve, mirroring the values of the Whitecaps Foundation. After recent cuts raised registration costs for several local sports clubs Ashley took matters into her own hands, organizing a local fundraising event which has also served to raise awareness of the real-life effects of funding cuts. Funds raised will be given directly to four local sport organizations who will then distribute the money to families who need financial assistance. At a recent visit to Ashley's school, Whitecaps players Dever Orgill and Randy Edwini-Bonsu donated a ticket package and scarf in support of her November 14 fundraiser.

The Whitecaps Foundation applauds Ashley and her selfless mission to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to play. Her example is proof that everyone can affect change in our community. To read the full news article and learn how to help Ashley achieve her goal, please click here.
