AFP Recommend Increase to Charitable Tax Credit
The Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) represents more than 30,000 members in 200 chapters throughout the world, working to advance philanthropy through advocacy, research, education and certification programs. The association fosters development and growth of fundraising professionals and promotes high ethical standards in the fundraising profession. The Vancouver Chapter works to effectively represent members and the sector as a whole and works to support legislative and policy measures benefitting the sector.
In September, the Vancouver Chapter submitted a brief to the Standing Committee on Finance and Government Services (Finance Committee), recommending that the government consider increasing the provincial portion of the charitable tax credit. Currently, BC has the third lowest rate of charitable tax credits in the country, behind only Nunavut and Yukon territories. In these challenging economic times, AFP is encouraging the provincial government to show leadership and help charities to do more with more, not more with less. Increased charitable tax credits are another tool to help organizations raise the funds needed to continue with their good works in communities throughout the province.
On November 19, the Finance Committee released its report on the 2009 Budget Consultations, and it recommended that the government include AFP’s recommendation as a measuing in the 2009 budget. Should the province decide to include an increase to the provincial portion of the charitable tax credit, it will place BC on par with Alberta and provide a combined (federal and provincial) charitable tax credit of 50 percent at the top-end.
